Communication and Information

The UNESCO Regional Communication Office in Nairobi Office caters for Communication and Informatics (CI) activities in the following countries: (i) UNESCO Nairobi Cluster countries which include: Burundi, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda (ii) Dar-es-Salaam Cluster countries covering the Comoros, the Seychelles, Madagascar, Mauritius and Tanzania and (iii) Addis Ababa Cluster covering Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Somalia.


The three principal strategic objectives of the Sector's programmes are:

  • Promoting the free flow of ideas and universal access to information
  • Promoting the expression of pluralism and cultural diversity in the media and world information
    networks
  • Promoting access for all to ICTs

Major projects carried out in the region:

  • Communication and Information Policy framework;
  • Establishment of Community Multimedia Centres;
  • Civic Education for Peace;
  • Communication, Democracy and Development;
  • Media strategy against HIV/AIDS;
  • Support of journalists associations networks;
  • Training and purchase of equipment for various media organizations;
  • News agencies, and
  • Empowerment of public information officers and the community groups.

 

One of the unique projects is the Africa Animated- a project which assemble resources and expertise for the production of culturally relevant children's animated cartoons and programmes in Africa.

During 2006/2007 biennium, the Communication Office plans to focus on on the following major projects:

1. The Eastern and Southern Africa Media Strategy agains HIV/AIDS

2. Establishment of a Regional Training and Production Centre for Animation in Kenya have a Regional Training Centre for Animation and Production in Kenya.

August 2007- Regional Training of Journalists on HIV/AIDS Reporting

October 2007- Regional Training on Establishment and Management of CMC's- venue to be decided.

1st December 2007- Eastern and Southern Africa Media Strategy against HIV/AIDS Red Ribbon Award. Venue to be decided.
