Freedom of Expression

By promoting free flow of ideas and universal access to information, UNESCO recognises the fact that press freedom is a conerstone of human rights, that it encourages transparency and good governance and sustainable human development.

The Regional Communication Office has over the years supported independent and pluralistic media in view of the impotant role they play in democracy and in the prevention and resolution of conflict. In recognition of the above, every year on the 3rd of May, UNESCO spearheads the commemoration of the "World Press Freedom Day".
