The strategic objective for the UNESCO Science Sector for the next six years (2008-2013) is "Mobilizing science, knowledge and policy for sustainable development". The sector has two priorities known as the Biennial Sectoral Priorities (BSP), where programme activities are concentrated. The priorities for 2010-11 are:

BSP 1:  Policies and capacity building in science, technology and innovation for sustainable development and poverty eradication.

BSP 2:  Sustainable management of fresh water, oceans and terrestrial resources as well as disaster preparedness and mitigation.
