Media Development

UNESCO Regional Communication Office has given enormous support to the schools of journalism and other media training institutions. Emphasis is also given to women journalists, media training institutions, women journalists, media professionals reporting on HIV/AIDS and public information officers. A practical example is the support given to the School of Journalism, University of Nairobi, in revision of its curriculum to include modules that cater for public information officers as well as online-investigative journalism.

Under this programme, the Office supports the strengthening of press agencies. In Kenya, a project on the restructuring of the Kenya News Agency has been on the pipeline. This project aims at improving information collection and dissemination of the government-owned news agency.

In addition to be above activities, the Office also implements various inter-regional, regional and national projects with the extra-budgetary funding in collaboration with various partners scuh as other UN agencies, bilateral development agencies, international and regional non-governmental agencies as well as the private sector. Such projects include: The Eastern and Southern Africa Media Strategy against HIV/AIDS Project ; Civic Education for Peace; Communication, Democracy and Development; and Development of Civic and Social Education through community media programming in Sudan.
